Maliq & D'Essentials was first formed on May 15, 2002 with 9 personnel. Their career journey as musicians began by becoming a café band in a small pub in a five-star hotel in Jakarta, where they played music that at that time was not very common among young people in general. Now after 15 years of existence, they are getting more compact even though they only leave 6 personnel consisting of Angga Puradiredja (vocals), Indah (vocals), Ilman (keyboards and piano), Jawa (bass), Lale (guitar), and Widi (drums).

The word Maliq itself is a concept and abbreviation of Music And Live Instrument Quality which was first initiated by Angga and Widi who also doubled as producers, composers, arrangers and songwriters. Then the term D'Essentials was originally a supporter of the concept which refers to other personnel. Now the term Maliq & D'Essentials has become an inseparable whole, although there are still many people who often mispronounce the name of this music group.

Many argue that Maliq & D'Essentials is a music group that carries the jaz genre. This is because their initial debut was on the stage of Java Jazz Festival 2005, a stage that made Maliq & D'Essentials known to the wider public. However, the music they carry is actually not only jaz, but a combination of various music genres such as, soul, funk, rock, blues, and others. They call it Organic Music to make it easier.

With a voice like velvet, a back catalogue of instant classics and a penchant for unpredictability, Danilla Riyadi is one of the most compelling Indonesian music artists in recent years. Born and raised in Jakarta, Danilla's first emerged as a demure chanteuse with Telisik, her critically-acclaimed, bossa nova-inflected 2014 debut album. Thanks to songs such as Ada Di Sana and Senja Di Ambang Pilu , Danilla would soon become an in-demand live act. For the 2017 sophomore album Lintasan Waktu, Danilla confounded expectations by going into darker territory on a collection of songs – including Aaa and Kalapuna – that saw her come into her own as a writer. The album coincided with Danilla’s increased popularity on social media thanks to her warts-and-all online persona. She would also branch out into collaborations and acting roles, while continuing to develop musically on Fingers, the 2019 EP that she wrote, performed and produced on her own. In 2022, Danilla released POP SEBLAY, her long-awaited third album that once again saw her embrace new musical directions as heard on tracks like MPV and KIW". Inspired by and recorded with her backing band and close associates, POP SEBLAY is chock-full of musical and lyrical in-jokes while also comprising Danilla’s strongest collection of songs to date.
